"Exclusivity, rather than inclusivity appears to be the current course."

Dear Dr. Taylor:

My name is Greg Barnes, a Samford alumnus from the Class of 1981. I have been reading media reports regarding the controversy surrounding the Campus Ministry Fair held on campus on August 31. I find the University's actions and behaviors in this situation deeply troubling. It seems to go against the goal of improving diversity in all aspects of the University.

My family has given generously to the University for many years. My father, Walter G. Barnes '51, while planning his will and trusts several years ago (prior to his passing in November 2021) asked me my thoughts on his significant gifts to his alma mater during that process. He knew those gifts would significantly reduce the amount of his estate that would pass down to his heirs. Of course, I was happy he chose Samford to be a major beneficiary of his estate. I say this to emphasize my love of the University and my desire and current plans to include Samford as a beneficiary in my own estate planning. Hence, my deep concern for the direction that the University seems to be heading. Exclusivity, rather than inclusivity apeears to be the current course.

I welcome the opportunity to receive a response from you in regards to this matter. More importantly, if I have mis-read these media reports or there are facts about which I am unaware, I would greatly appreciate your shedding light as needed.

With kind regards, I am

Sincerely yours,

Gregory W. Barnes, RHU, LUTCF, EMT-P
